Projections — Read more
Yara van der Velden’s photographic undertaking Projections (2015) is a holistic investigation into Mongolian socio-economics and culture. It documents the norms and dreams in a country that until 2014 was considered among the fastest growing economies in the World.
I collaborated with Yara in designing a book to frame the project. It consists of 5 chapters that cover disparate subjects such as construction initiatives, clothing habits of business-men, and material dreams. Throughout the book, a number of rare earth-minerals are presented to the reader on small page-inserts. Minerals that are mined in Mongolia and constitute(d) a great deal of the country's revenue. The layout of the book tries to encapsulate the quietness and vastness of Mongolia’s sparsely populated geography and mining territories. It does so through its large 20 × 28 cm-format, and by introducing white space between the images who are often placed across pages rather than being contained within the spread, letting the reader “travel” between them.
